The lack of an organizing body or overarching league means that players can find competitive events that follow the rules they are comfortable with, so ultimately both sides can have their way. Some tournaments have banned Steve, but others have declared that he is totally legal to play or have only prohibited specific techniques. Whether or not one believes that Steve is among the most broken characters in the fighting game genre, they will be able to find people to play against and events to attend that agree with their viewpoint. For players with this mindset, since anyone can select Steve and learn to use his potentially overpowered abilities, he is fair to choose, and those who aren't playing as him are voluntarily electing to be at a disadvantage. Game-breaking characters are a part of the fighting game genre's history, so many believe that any combatant should be allowed unless they make matches literally unplayable. Those who defend the ban say that disallowing the character protects the game's integrity and allows competitors to play on an even footing. Even before the discovery of the PMLG technique, many considered the character grossly overpowered, and now there is a more concrete reason to restrict his use. community have celebrated the decision to ban Steve. Some tournament organizers tried to ban just the use of PMLG, but this is hard to enforce unless a referee watches or records every match. The discovery of this technique led to the banning of the character in multiple tournaments. The ability to cancel hit-stun gives Steve an unparalleled advantage, and its inclusion in the game is assumed to be unintentional. Doing this allows the player to begin attacking almost immediately as if they were punishing a whiffed attack, even though the opponent successfully connected. With this technique, Steve can cancel hit-stun in Super Smash Bros. Near the start of 2023, a technique, often called PMLG, was discovered.
